April and her grandmother Lucienne are reeling after the mysterious death of Guy, April’s father who was the only child Lucienne’s ever had. A short time after, April gets herself into trouble and they find themselves at another funeral, that of April’s friend. Present is Marlene, April’s mother and Darren, her right-hand man on the farm.
That Christmas, April and Lucienne conspire to go to Africa together to where Ben, April’s brother works as a doctor at a Catholic mission hospital, a hospital staffed almost entirely by Congolese under the supervision of Sister Cecilia. In spite of her objections, Marlene drives them to the airport. On the flight, April becomes fascinated with a man who is also travelling to Kisantu. When come to their destination, he helps them through the airport until they meet up with Ben and Sister Cecilia.
When April arrives at the mission, she discovers that Ben, Sister Cecilia and Nana Lucienne have a special bond. They speak the local language well and this leaves her feeling left out and all alone. She soon seeks consolation with the missionary whom she met earlier during the flight to Africa.
Meanwhile, back in Canada, Marlene, who is still grieving the death of her husband and the loss of her career waits for letters from her children. Finding she is all alone, she drinks too much and finds herself attracted to Rocky, one of the two men who must help her run her dead husband’s farm. This creates trouble between the help, Darren, who has put his life on hold in order to help her out, and Rocky who acts as if his involvement with the boss lady means he is in charge of the farm. “It won’t be long before I’m in charge of this place,” he tells Darren.
Before long, Darren discovers how Rocky is stealing from his employer. One night Marlene assists him with the difficult birth of a calf, he knows he is losing patience with her and her ineptitude. Still, he fears talking to her because before Ben left he made him a promise to keep to himself what he knows about the way Guy died. Marlene finds a confidant in her former supervisor who helps her get a perspective on things and get a hold of herself again.
Meanwhile, her daughter in Congo thinks to redeem herself by embracing the faith of her friend, Paul. She sneaks away from her job at the Catholic mission so she can go into the town and help him prepare for a retreat. During the days that they go into the brousse, she discovers that she’s in love with him. Upon her return to the convent, she finds even more ways to be able to meet him in secret.
Just at that time, Congo is invaded and she finds herself in the middle of a war. Sister Cecilia, Ben, Nana and even April work hard to keep up with the hundreds of wounded soldiers that arrive. The electricity goes off and while washes and sterilizes bandages, she devises a way to see Paul so she can profess her love for him. When she reaches him, he tells her he’s is leaving the country to be with his wife and family. He’d never mentioned his family to April before and she’s devastated.April’s grandmother leaves even before the troops retreat and move toward the border. They have threatened and looted, but they didn’t harm the Sisters at the mission or the hospital which was needed to take care of the wounded. However, when April sees how they go through the hospital and shoot every wounded man who is unfit for travel, she’s had enough. She wants to go home to Canada..
Marlene had been shocked to see her mother-in-law arrive home without her daughter. She waits several more weeks, during which she is still dealing with her own problems. She has fired Rocky and learned the truth about her husband’s from Darren. She is accusing Darren of lying to her when she gets a call from her son, Ben. He breaks the news to his mother that April is on her way home and that he, too, will be there before the year ends.
