In the quaint town of Kilteegan, nestled between rolling hills and picturesque landscapes, is a bridge that holds within its ancient stones a story that has come to symbolize the divisions within our society. The Kilteegan Bridge, once a beacon of unity and connection, now stands as a physical representation of the barriers that separate us.

As dusk settles over the town, shadows dance upon the rickety wooden planks that stretch across the river. The bridge, worn and weathered, carries within it the weight of generations. It was built over a century ago, a testament to the resilience and craftsmanship of its time. But age has taken its toll, and the bridge now stands as a symbolic reminder of the divide that has grown between us.

On one side of the bridge, the bustling town hums with life. Local businesses thrive, vibrant music fills the air, and faces reflect a sense of community. The people here are hopeful, driven by the possibilities that lie beyond the river's edge. They embrace diversity and celebrate the unique perspectives that each individual brings. To them, the bridge is a pathway to progress, a means to connect and build a stronger future.

But on the other side of the divide, a different story unfolds. A community shrouded in fear and uncertainty resides here. Closed-off from the vibrancy of the town, they cling to the familiarity of their own comfort zones. Change is met with resistance, and the bridge that was once seen as a gateway to opportunity is now viewed as a threat to their way of life.

Over time, this division has deepened, fueled by misconceptions, fear, and a lack of understanding. The Kilteegan Bridge, once a physical link between two communities, has become a metaphorical representation of the chasms that exist within our society. It stands as a reminder of the work that needs to be done to bridge the gap between us.

But how did it come to this? How did a once-unifying structure become a source of division?

The Origins of Division

At the heart of the Kilteegan Bridge story lies a conflict that dates back decades. A disagreement over land ownership and the distribution of resources created a rift between the two communities. The bridge, which was meant to bring people together, became a physical and metaphorical line that separated them.

As tensions grew, so did the divide. Rumors, stereotypes, and misconceptions fanned the flames, turning a simple disagreement into a deeply rooted schism. People on both sides began to see themselves as separate entities, detached from the humanity of those on the other side.

Attempts to rebuild the bridge and heal the divisions have been made throughout the years. Community leaders have organized dialogues, workshops, and events to foster understanding and encourage collaboration. Yet, the emotional scars run deep, and the wounds are slow to heal.

The Ripple Effect

The effects of this division extend far beyond the bounds of Kilteegan. It serves as a microcosm for the challenges faced by societies around the world. The story of the Kilteegan Bridge resonates with people who have experienced similar divides in their own communities.

It raises important questions about the walls we build, both physically and metaphorically. What drives us to separate ourselves from one another? Are we so afraid of the unknown that we would rather cling to what is familiar, even if it means perpetuating division?

It is essential to recognize that these divisions are not insurmountable. The story of the Kilteegan Bridge teaches us that with perseverance, empathy, and open dialogue, we can build bridges that span our differences and create a more inclusive society.

Building Bridges, Mending Fences

The path to healing starts with acknowledging our shared humanity. We must be willing to challenge our preconceptions and engage in meaningful conversations with those who hold different views. By fostering understanding, we can undo the biases that fuel division.

Educational initiatives can play a crucial role in bridging the gap. Schools and community centers can provide safe spaces for dialogue and learning, equipping individuals with the tools to navigate diverse perspectives. Through education, we can empower the next generation to embrace inclusivity and build a more united future.

Ultimately, healing the divisions that separate us requires a collective effort. It demands empathy, compassion, and a willingness to confront our own biases. It asks us to stand on the Kilteegan Bridge as a symbol of unity, and to take a step forward towards a future that is built on understanding and solidarity.

The Kilteegan Bridge story serves as a poignant reminder of the divisions that exist within our society. It calls us to reflect on the barriers we have erected and the consequences they bring. It urges us to listen, to understand, and to take action.

In a world that is increasingly polarized, we have a choice. We can continue to widen the gaps that separate us, or we can make the conscious decision to bridge the divides. The Kilteegan Bridge story prompts us to choose the latter, to come together and build a future where unity triumphs over division.

Kilteegan Bridge, Ireland 1963.

On the face of it, life is idyllic for Eli and Lena Kogan. Living in their beautiful house in the Irish countryside, their children are growing up happy and safe surrounded by a loving community. So when a letter arrives one day threatening to shatter their peaceful and prosperous world, Lena and Eli have no option but face the dark reality of their situation. How best to do that, is something that drives a wedge between them.
As a Jewish child, escaped from Germany in 1939, Eli is all for letting those dark days where they belong, for him, there’s no future in the past.
But for Lena, it’s different. She knows that the only way she can move her family forward in peace is to first go back, and there is only one man who knows the whole truth.
From rural Ireland to wartime France, What Divides us, tells a tale of loyalty and love, resentment and revenge, that has far reaching consequences for the Kogan family, the unravelling of which might just destroy their future.
